A Beginner's Guide to Special Abilities !
So, you want one of your lovely characters to have a special ability? Fantastic! Just keep in mind the guidelines that are listed below for each special ability. Happy creating!
Metamorphmagi
A metamorphmagi has the ability to change their appearance at will. The biggest thing to keep in mind when it comes to metamorphmagi is that they are born, not made. This means that you can't just suddenly become a metamorphmagi, nor do they suddenly lose this ability. This trait is also usually hereditary.
Vampires
Vampires are non-wizard part-humans, as classified by law enforcement groups, and they are made, not born. This process is very delicate, and very dangerous. There needs to be an exchange of blood. That is, the vampire has to give the human some of their own blood, and then nearly drain them of their own. There are also some restrictions that we would like you to keep in mind:
- Garlic and holy water will do nothing for a vampire, nor will crucifixes.
- Vampires are sustained solely by blood. They can eat regular food, but large amounts of it will potentially make them ill, or at least have some severe stomach pain.
- They are naturally pale, and those vampires that were darker-skinned in life often appear ashy or washed out after they are turned.
- Vampires are also ice cold to the touch. Often, they will use things like coffee and tea as a stimulant to help warm up their hands and mask it.
- Sunlight will severely hurt a vampire, and potentially even kill them, depending on the age and time of day. The younger the vampire, and the earlier in the day, the more hurt they will be.
- Vampires have slightly better reflexes, and heal extremely quickly, however, they absolutely DO NOT fly, read minds, have special powers outside the ones listed, read or control minds, or sparkle.
- They cannot have children.
- Wood will have a much more severe effect on a vampire than any other material, and the wounds inflicted by wood will heal much more slowly. However, wood will only kill a vampire if they are stabbed directly in the heart with it.
- Spells can affect vampires. However, the killing curse will not actually kill a vampire. The older the vampire is, the less effect this spell will have on a vampire.
Werewolves
Werewolves are created, not born, and must be bitten by a werewolf under a full transformation in order for the full change to occur. After they are bitten, they will turn into a wolf at each full moon.
- There is no cure for lycanthropy
- Werewolves are not affected by silver.
- Children of werewolves are not werewolves, they must be bitten. However, they may show some werewolf habits, such as stiffness around the full moon, heightened aggression, and increased irritability.
- The only way to maintain a shred of humanity during the full moon is to take wolfsbane potion.
- A werewolf will exhibit certain signs leading up to the full moon, including but not limited to: itchy eyes, muscle cramps and stiffness, nightmares, occasional fever.
Veela
Veela are magical creatures who have a natural affinity for nature and draw people to them easily, usually of the opposite sex. They are also reminiscent of the sirens of Ancient Greece.
- Veela in human form are very beautiful
- When angry, they can throw handfuls of fire, their faces change into a birdlike appearance, and they sprout scaly wings. These shifts in appearance will disappear when the veela calms down.
- Full blooded Veela do not carry wands, nor will they attend Warren Academy, as they cannot perform the same kind of magic that witches and wizards can. However, half blooded veela with one wizard/witch parent can, if the magical gene was passed along to them.
- Part veela do not change when they are angry, and while they have some small amount of nature magic, they are nowhere near as powerful as their full blooded relatives.
Seers
Very rare, true seers are able to see into the future and make vague and cryptic prophecies. Rarely they can see into the past, with a slightly larger amount of clarity. Seers are born, and the ability is hereditary, usually manifesting itself at a young age, and never showing itself any later than eight or nine. It has the tendency to skip a generation or two, an is a seriously misunderstood ability.
Animagi
Animagi are trained to take the form of a single animal, that will always have distinguishing marks that are representative of the witch or wizard. This training is highly advanced Transfiguration, and takes a lot of time and practice to perfect without disastrous consequences. All animagi are required to register with the Special Forces division of the Magical Police Force.
Parselmouths
Parselmouths have the ability to speak and converse with serpents and all serpent-like creatures. This language sounds like a lot of hissing noises to those who don't have this ability.
- Parselmouths can communicate with one another in Parseltongue
- Normally hereditary, this ability can be learned through years of practice and instruction.
- This is an AU site, everybody. That means that characters with this ability are not allowed to be related to Salazar Slytherin, or Voldemort since, you know, he hasn't been born yet. And that history is thousands of miles away.
- This ability does not allow the person to control snakes, just speak with them.
Legilimency
Legilimency is the ability to extract emotions and memories from someone, however, keep the following things in mind:
- They cannot extract emotions and memories in the way that they remove them, they can just read and interpret them.
- It's easier to use legilimency on someone who is weakened in some way.
- Eye contact is almost always required. If they don't have eye contact, they must at least be within close proximity to the person.
- The memory that a legilimens is looking for needs to be brought to the front of someone's mind before it can be read. Otherwise, the mind is far too complex for even a legilimens to navigate.
- They can plant false memories.
- This ability must be taught, it is not inherited.
- Legilimency is taught at Warren Academy as an elective. However, only honors students are eligible for this.
Occlumency
Occlumency is the ability to block the mental intrusion of a legilimens and other branches of magic designed to penetrate the mind.
- This is the only way to block the attack of a legilimens without avoiding physical nearness and eye contact.
- An Occlumens must be able to clear their mind, giving the attacker nothing to latch onto.
- Only a master occlumens can create false emotions and memories that are sufficient to fool a legilimens.
- Like Legilimency, Occlumency is taught at Warren Academy as an elective, but only for the honors students.
Squibs
Squibs are individuals born to magical parents who possess no magical ability.
- Because squibs are not muggles, the charms designed to hide magical things and places from muggles will not work on them.
- Squibs cannot suddenly gain magical powers, though certain quick, self help programs exist, the validity of these is questionable at best.
- They can work in the wizarding world, though not all employers will accept them.
- Squibs often feel a bit disenfranchised, and most of the time feel little to no connection with either the muggle or magical worlds.
