THE ROARING TWENTIES The year is 1920. On the surface, this was a time of revolutionary fashion, culture, and music, and yet beneath the allure of the Big Apple came a dark, looming presence threatening to swallow the City whole, wrought by the cold, black hearts of New York City’s finest.
Beneath the façade of investors, socialites, and legitimate businessmen, the secrets of the Underground lurk in the shadows, coming out only when the streets were clear. With Prohibition in place and the local government cracking down on the distribution of “illegal” goods to the populace, many factions led by the most powerful wizards and witches vie for the opportunity to tap into a booming, profitable market. The streets are now more dangerous than ever, threatened by an ongoing territorial war between multiple large factions vying for total reign of the New York Underground. With murder counts escalating astronomically and skirmishes bloodying faction-territory lines, there remains only a handful of neutral zones where people gather to escape fear and societal constraints. Many have said that the key to ruling New York City was not to take over a rival faction’s territory but to acquire the allegiance of the neutral zones.
One must plan strategically. Accordingly.
And while factions continuously battle against one another for territory, many often discount the presence of the Coppers who could be watching at any moment.
This world takes place in 1920’s New York City in an alternate Harry Potter universe. Wizards and witches remain unknown to the Muggle world, choosing instead to remain as part of this Underground society. There will be magic and spells, wand battles as well as gun fights, underground schemes, betrayals, love, violence, corruption, and scandals galore.
THE IDEA OF FACTIONS
To survive in a dog-eat-dog world like this, some may view factions as a necessity. Faction heads, or Don's as we'll call it, provide those under their wing with protection at a certain price. Whether your character has something they want or can provide services they need, one this is for certain. Don's won't allow you to join their faction if they have little to no gain. It's risk and reward, meaning if they're willing to risk their asses for you, you most certainly have something that'll reward them for their... inconvenience.
Each faction is broken up by neighborhood for your convenience; however, we acknowledge that there are various sub-neighborhoods or streets in New York City as well. Will your character remain safely under the wing of a Don or will they be ambitious enough to lead their own?
A PLACE OF REFUGE While the twenties may be a time of cultural change, there is still that deeply embedded fear of exposure of magic. The general populace are still unaware that magic truly exists, but that doesn't mean everyone in society is oblivious. In fact, those leading the New York City Underground know for certain how useful magic could be, especially when it is under their control. Magic, however, is not very helpful unless honed. For young, budding witches and wizards, Warren Academy was built and hidden using the most powerful of charms to provide a place of refuge for young witches and wizards to learn the arts of magic while remaining safe and hidden from those who may wish to use their gifts for... terrible things.
THE HARDSHIPS OF NEUTRALITY There are some who wish to remain neutral during such dark times, but can they stay neutral for very long? Not only do the Don's of each faction wish to strike an allegiance with the most influential "Neutral" people, but the Coppers are on the lookout as well. No one can ever be fully neutral, can they?
